Brighten The Passage Projects Earns Award of Excellence

Downtown Milwaukee’s Brighten the Passage project, for which Ring & DuChateau provided lighting design, has been recognized with an Award of Excellence in Urban Place Management from the International Downtown Association (IDA).

“This is a pretty special recognition,” said Ring & DuChateau Associate/Lighting Group Manager Holly Blomquist. She led the project for R&D, with the entire lighting design team having a role in the final design.

The award recognizes an excellent response to an urban place management challenge in the category of Planning, Design and Infrastructure, specifically in the areas of downtown master planning, streetscape improvements, sustainable infrastructure and wayfinding.

The goal of Brighten the Passage was to strengthen pedestrian connectivity between the Historic Third Ward and the downtown Milwaukee’s central business district. The project team, led by Milwaukee Downtown and Historic Third Ward BID #2, accomplished the goal starting with mural art on four I-794 Freeway supports framing the street area, followed by the installation of a dynamic aesthetic lighting array designed by Ring & DuChateau’s lighting design group on both sides of the corridor. The system which features a nightly light show that corresponds to season, events, sports teams and holidays and includes interactive color spotlights on the sidewalks.
